. so far it's been a pretty good night for mitt romney but not a clean sweep. ken wayne is here now with the latest returns. >> reporter: mitt romney has won massachusetts, vermont and virginia. newt gingrich has won georgia. the polls just closed in idaho where 32 delegates are at stake and we will bring you those numbers when they come in. idaho are small potatoes. it's a close battle in ohio between romney and santorum. 63 delegates are at stake there. mitt romney has 25% of the votes. santorum 37%. gingrich 15%, paul 7%. let's take a look at two other states that are just coming in now. tennessee and oklahoma. rick santorum is looking good right now in tennessee. in fact, rick santorum is just won tennessee with 44% of the vote to mitt romney's 28%. in oklahoma, with 40 delegates on the line, santorum is ahead with 36%, romney has 29%. paul has 9%, gingrich has 25%. so again the real battle no surprise is in ohio. if you're a political junkie, this is getting very interesting. we'll update this at 6:15. >>> and our election coverage also continues online at ktvu.com. we will hav
at mississippi where 40 delegates are at stake and this new poll has newt gingrich with 33, romney with 31, santorum 37, all within this very 4% margin of error. very close. in alabama with its 50 dell bullets, p.p.p. is giving romney the lead with 31, 30 and 29. ron paul is off to the side. p.p.p. asks for voters in those states if they thought that president obama was a muslim or a christian. this has been talked about a lot today. i think the reason is because the answer is shocking. it shocked me, i'm sure it's going to shock you too. in alabama 45% of gop voters believe that president obama is a muslim. in mississippi 52% of gop voters believe that he's a muslim. i just find that amazing but here to discuss the latest polls and the state of the gop race in the south we're going to turn to alabama and steve flowers steve is a veteran political reporter at wake tv in montgomery alabama. glad to have you with us. >> thank you governor. glad to be with you. >> i just love the way you say it even. all right. for the gop. >> steve handelsman joins us from columbus, ohio. conventional wisdom says if romney wins ohio he wins the nomination. where do we stand right now? >> reporter: well, we stand where we don't know. as the votes are counted on this super tuesday night and nbc news makes its various projections, ohio does remain the focus. romney and santorum. nbc news projects ohio is too close to call. mitt romney cast his ballot late this afternoon in massachusetts. and tonight notched his first super tuesday victory. nbc news projecting romney wins virginia. and projecting that newt gingrich wins his home state of georgia. but as voters cast their ballots on this super tuesday, in eleven states, ohio was the most watched. in this swing state, many republicans were un-enthusiastic. and many were split. >> i voted for mitt romney. >> mitt romney because of his business experience. >> people aren't feeling there's a strong person at all. but i think santorum could pull it out. >> reporter: can he beat mitt romney in ohio? the pressure is on rick santorum. >> this is a somewhat important day in my li
have just closed in eight of the 10 super tuesday states. mitt romney is already the declared winner in virginia, massachusetts, and vermont. newt gingrich is the declared winner in georgia tonight. that's one of the two states with the most delegates at play. we want to show you what's going on now. ohio is the closest battleground state today. it is the state where 63 delegates are at stake. we want to pull up ohio for you. 63 delegates here. polls show this to be a toss up between mitt romney and rick santorum. right now with just 1% of the precincts counted, santorum is leading 39% to romney's 37%. the other big state at play is of course georgia. this state has the most delegates here today on this super tuesday 76 delegates at stake. it is gingrich's home state. he needed this win to keep his campaign alive looks like he did it. newt gingrich is the projected winner in his state. so in all there are 118 delegates at stake. 1144 delegates are needed to win the republican nomination. as it stands right now, mitt romney has the most delegates with 220. rick santorum has 86, newt g
